On July 9th, York Region Council voted to make wearing a mask mandatory indoors at public places. I can appreciate that while the majority where supportive of this measure, some had deep concerns. The merits of wearing a mask have evolved over the course of the Covid 19 pandemic.
I appreciate that everyone has their own perspective and I respect that. For me, supporting the wearing of masks comes down to a few simple points:
- The World Health Organizaton (WHO), the Centre for Disease Control (CDC) in the U.S., and our own York Region Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Kurji and his team – all recommend wearing a mask to prevent the spread of the disease.
- In the recorded history of pandemics, there has always been a second wave and we must take steps to minimize the impact that is undoubtedly coming.
- This minor inconvenience could save lives.
Regional Council included a number of exemptions to help those who cannot wear a mask. For details on the mask policy, please refer to this link: york.ca/mandatorymasks
One last thought on this matter, encouragement, education and a supportive community spirit will be the key to moving forward on this issue. Mask shaming and bullying will not win the day and will only divide our town. Anyone not wearing a mask, may be doing so because they are exempted. They are under no obligation to explain why. Everyone has their own situation. Managing yourself and your family should be your only priority. I have seen a great deal of toxic language posted on FaceBook surrounding this issue and quite frankly it alarms me. We are better than that. Be the best example you can be so that others may follow. Harassing others into your viewpoint will never win the day. Govern yourself accordingly and lead by example.
We are in this together.
