Economic development is vital to the well-being of any municipality because it drives improvements in quality of life, enhances public services, and sustains financial stability. Through job creation, increased tax revenues, and the growth of local businesses, economic development fosters a thriving community that benefits residents, businesses, and local governments. East Gwillimbury currently has a commercial tax base of 10%. That means 90% of the town’s tax revenue is coming from residential taxpayers. For me those numbers are out of whack. We need a higher commercial tax base to take the pressure off homeowners. Below are key reasons why economic development is crucial to the well-being of a municipality: 1. Job Creation and Income Growth Economic development attracts new businesses and industries, leading to job creation and a more diverse employment base. A growing local economy provides opportunities for residents to secure stable, well-paying jobs, which in turn improves their standard of living. Shorter Commute Time If we can provide more local employment, it will reduce the number of residents commuting into Toronto and the GTA every day. That is good for the environment. And a shorter commute means more time to spend with your family. Reduced wear and tear on our vehicles is a good thing, and of course, less money is spent on gasoline. East Gwillimbury is proud to be on the short list of potential locations for a new healthcare facility. Like many in our community, I’m eagerly awaiting Southlake’s decision on where this important site will be built. I’ve consistently supported efforts to bring this facility to our town — a vision that began in the previous term of council when Southlake first announced it had outgrown its Newmarket location. From the beginning, this has been a collaborative effort, with both staff and council working together to advocate for East Gwillimbury. It’s easy to see why having a hospital in our community would be such a game-changer. The benefits are many — from improved access to care to local job creation — and the positive impact would be felt for generations to come. Few initiatives offer the kind of long-term value and transformative potential that a local hospital brings. Here are some key benefits a hospital brings to a municipality: 1. Improved Access to Healthcare At the most fundamental level, a hospital ensures that residents have timely access to critical medical care. For communities currently relying on distant facilities, localizing care can reduce travel time in emergencies, improve chronic disease management, and encourage preventative care.
