East Gwillimbury is proud to be on the short list of potential locations for a new healthcare facility. Like many in our community, I’m eagerly awaiting Southlake’s decision on where this important site will be built.

I’ve consistently supported efforts to bring this facility to our town — a vision that began in the previous term of council when Southlake first announced it had outgrown its Newmarket location. From the beginning, this has been a collaborative effort, with both staff and council working together to advocate for East Gwillimbury.

It’s easy to see why having a hospital in our community would be such a game-changer. The benefits are many — from improved access to care to local job creation — and the positive impact would be felt for generations to come.

Few initiatives offer the kind of long-term value and transformative potential that a local hospital brings.

Here are some key benefits a hospital brings to a municipality:

1. Improved Access to Healthcare

At the most fundamental level, a hospital ensures that residents have timely access to critical medical care. For communities currently relying on distant facilities, localizing care can reduce travel time in emergencies, improve chronic disease management, and encourage preventative care. This leads to healthier outcomes and saves lives.

2. Economic Development & Job Creation

Hospitals are economic engines. They attract a wide range of professionals — doctors, nurses, specialists, technicians, and support staff — who contribute to the local economy. Ancillary businesses such as pharmacies, labs, medical offices, and wellness clinics often follow. A hospital doesn’t just serve patients; it creates a health-focused local economy.

3. Attracting and Retaining Residents

Access to quality healthcare is a top priority for families, retirees, and young professionals when choosing where to live. A hospital signals that the municipality is growing, stable, and capable of supporting its population’s needs. It can also be a deciding factor for businesses considering relocation to the area.

4. Community Resilience

Hospitals increase a community’s ability to respond to health emergencies and disasters. Whether it’s a pandemic, a natural disaster, or a local crisis, having a hospital nearby strengthens a town’s capacity to care for its residents during uncertain times.

5. Support for an Aging Population

Many municipalities are experiencing growth in their senior population. Older adults typically require more frequent and specialized care. A hospital provides the services necessary to allow seniors to age in place, near their families and support networks.

6. Training and Education Opportunities

Hospitals often partner with colleges and universities to provide clinical placements, internships, and professional development. This can turn a municipality into a training hub for future healthcare professionals, fostering talent retention and local expertise.

7. Civic Pride and Community Identity

A hospital is more than a building — it’s a symbol of progress, compassion, and collective wellbeing. It fosters pride in the community and reflects a commitment to public service and health equity.

Conclusion

While the financial investment in a hospital is significant, the return is even greater. Improved health outcomes, a stronger local economy, better emergency response, and enhanced quality of life make hospitals one of the most impactful legacies a municipality can build for current and future generations.

Building a hospital is not just a medical decision — it’s a visionary step toward a more vibrant, sustainable, and caring community.
